Cassie is a California native who grew up on the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta at the edge of the East Bay Area. She earned her associate’s degree in journalism from Los Medanos College before transferring to Sacramento State University, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and minor in creative writing. In the summer of 2023, she earned a master’s degree in journalism from Ball State University with a specialization in reporting and storytelling.
Cassie got her professional start at The Sacramento Bee, first as a breaking news intern before becoming the newspaper’s deputy op-ed editor and California Influencers project manager. Then it was off to the Central Valley, where she worked as a local government reporter in Stockton, one of the country’s most diverse cities, for The Stockton Record/USA Today Network. There, she covered protests, public institutions of all kinds, criminal justice, and the COVID-19 pandemic, including the first cases and deaths and the overflowing hospitals.
Cassie now serves as the deputy editor of the nonprofit startup Stocktonia News Service, as well as its local accountability editor and reporter, where she manages investigative coverage and projects surrounding local accountability of Stockton city government, which was described by a civil grand jury as ungovernable.
